As someone who went into management due to my own misguided delusions, I would amen strongly to this post.
Management is a thankless job and none is going to thank you for being a tremendous manager and for creating the culture and mentoring people to do great things. You can do it, if you enjoy doing that sort of stuff, but don't do it to help other people. You will see that people won't thank you and some might even criticize you.
After being a manager for 6+ years, I feel like I'm stuck. I'm retooling myself to get back to an IC career or to move to PM ladder.
Engineering management has no love in this environment and do yourself a favor: be a strong IC and move to the principal track path, if you can. But, don't get into the garbage roles like team lead, scrum master etc.
