I had the exact same barrier in my last startup, were not only junior engineers but VP of engineering parroting the line that the code is all spaghetti and they need to rewrite everything to run experiments.

I hit a pause for my organization on this rewrites and instead emphasized to balance between the rewrite and value-adds. This way, we dont take a year long goals of rewrites.

IMO, while we need senior and principal engineers to bring ownership to the table, particularly the VP of Engineering needs to champion this mindset. Far too often, startups look at faang on resumes and hire people, but they forget that the startups dont have the luxury that a FAANG has: time and resources!

So, going with a very calibrated and measured approach to rewrites is super critical. I loved the word technical wealth! Totally gonna use it!
